A Panoply cutter was a smaller ship type available to prefects of the Panoply for regular law enforcement activities. It saw frequent use during their investigations in the Glitter Band.
Individual Prefects required authorisation for piloting a cutter.
Historically, cutters are a form of sailboat or small sailship used for coastal patrolling and coastal economic activities. The term is also applied to modern, motorised ships of smaller size, used by coast guards, smaller navies or marine rescue services. By analogy, Panoply cutters are smaller spaceships used for local patrol within the Band, often functioning as an equivalent of a police patrol car or patrol vehicle.
