Though crossbows were fairly archaic and primitive ranged weaponry in the era of starfaring humanity, they still found uses as anti-personnel or hunting weaponry on some human-settled worlds. Crossbows used fletched bolts or arrows with arrowheads, made of sturdy material.
On Sky's Edge, crossbows were used for certain specialised hunting and gamekeeping tasks, including those involving hamadryad hunting or capture. Cahuella's arsenal of weapons at his base in the Reptile House included crossbows.
In Chasm City on Yellowstone, they were in use as part of the Shadowplay bounty hunting games, and as ranged weapons by members of the local criminal underground in The Mulch. They are wielded both by humans and hyperpigs.
